How to choose

• String vibration: the Sonometer 3 Wire Pattern has a spring balance reading 100N x 5N, while the Sonometer Simple Pattern has two 50N spring balances and three bridges.
• Air columns: the Resonance Apparatus with Brass Tube adjusts the air column from 300mm to 530mm by moving the outer tube.
• Wave behaviour: the ripple tanks project wave patterns onto a screen, and the Wave Form Helix extends from 3 metres to about 9 metres.
• Signals: the Signal Generator and Amplifier 1hz to 100hz gives sine, square and triangular outputs at the same time, and the oscilloscope uses a 6 inch cathode ray tube.

How is the speed of sound measured with the kit?

The Speed of Sound Kit has two condenser microphones, placed a metre apart, that act as start and stop signals as the sound wave passes.

What does the Bell In Glass Jar show?

It demonstrates the properties of a vacuum. It has a baseplate with tap, a glass bell jar and a battery operated bell, and is used with a hand pump or an electric vacuum pump.
