UNICEF procures only LLINs that are WHO-prequalified. The practical consequence for a buyer is a single question: is this exact net, from this exact manufacturer and site, on the relevant list today? A statement that the insecticide used is qualified does not answer it, because the listing attaches to the net product and its maker, not to the chemistry alone. Ask for the listing entry and the manufacturer named on it, and check the current published list rather than relying on a catalogue line.

Nomenclature also carries weight in tender documents. Pyrethroid-PBO nets are treated as a distinct class in Global Fund procurement policy, because the PBO synergist component does not sit inside the definition applied to conventional long-lasting insecticidal nets. A net described simply as an "LLIN PBO" may therefore be assessed against a different requirement from the one a buyer assumed. State the class explicitly on the enquiry and on the tender response.

What to specify when ordering nets

  • Active ingredient and its concentration, and for a PBO net the synergist content — the primary specification, and not currently published against these products.
  • Net dimensions and shape, and the number of hanging points — a "rectangular" net is not a size.
  • Mesh density and denier, together rather than separately.
  • Wash resistance and expected service life, stated against the test basis used.
  • Packing, labelling and bale configuration, which for programme distribution is usually specified down to the carton.
  • The qualification listing entry for the exact product and manufacturer, as above.

Why the microcuvette decides a point-of-care programme, not the photometer

For haemoglobin and glucose testing, the instrument is bought once and the microcuvette is bought forever. Each test consumes one single-use cuvette, so the running cost, the storage requirement and the failure mode of a screening programme all sit with the consumable rather than the analyser. Microcuvettes are lot-controlled and dated, and they are matched to a specific photometer model — the haemoglobin and glucose cuvettes listed here are not interchangeable, and neither is interchangeable with another manufacturer device.

Three things follow, and they should be settled before the first instrument ships:

Calculate the cuvette requirement from the test volume, not the instrument count. A clinic doing two hundred tests a week needs two hundred cuvettes a week plus wastage, indefinitely.

Confirm shelf life, storage temperature and lot dating. A consignment of cuvettes with short remaining life, or one that cannot be stored at the temperature the destination can actually maintain, is a write-off however good the instrument is.

Confirm the resupply route and lead time to the destination before commissioning. An analyser without cuvettes is not a slower analyser; it is an idle one, and the gap between running out and resupply is where screening programmes stop.

The same logic applies to the cleaning sponge and, in a different way, to the dried-blood-spot punch: a punch described as reusable needs a documented cleaning procedure between samples, because carry-over between blood spots is the risk that a reusable punch introduces and a single-use one does not.

Are the microcuvettes for the haemoglobin and glucose photometers interchangeable?

No. Each microcuvette is made for a specific photometer model and measurement, so haemoglobin and glucose cuvettes are ordered separately against the instrument they belong to. Confirm the model on every reorder, because a cuvette that does not match the analyser cannot be used.

Can a net be substituted for another type with the same insecticide?

Not on a programme order without the buyer agreement.
