Didactic Lab manufactures and supplies energy transfer apparatus that shows one form of energy changing into another. The range includes demountable transformers with a laminated low-loss core, demonstration motors and dynamos with 4mm sockets, and Energy Transfer Kit units such as the Spring Unit and Mounted Solar Cell on 165 x 100mm bases. The Hero Engine models a steam engine that turns thermal energy into kinetic energy.

| Heat and water power | 2 | Hero Engine (steam jets turn the glass apparatus), Water Turbine with Dynamo Model (transparent cover with inlet and outlet tubes) |
How to choose
- For step up and step down transformer work, the Demountable Transformer Kit has a laminated low-loss core and measures 150mm (L) x 170mm (H); add the Demountable Transformer Accessory Set to show step down currents large enough to weld metals or boil water.
- The Demonstration Electric Motor runs on 6-8V DC with a removable bar magnet, while the Demonstration Dynamo Model sits on a 230 x 90mm base plate with a 120mm hand-drive pulley and can also run as a motor on 6-8V DC.
- The Demonstration Motor AC/DC produces AC and DC current at the same time when its hand wheel is turned, with LED diodes showing the output.
- Energy Transfer Kit units share a 165 x 100mm base with 4mm socket terminals: the Spring Unit stores energy in a wound clock spring, the Mounted Solar Cell uses a selenium photo-voltaic cell, and the Line Shaft Unit winds up a weight on a cord.
- Choose the Hero Engine to show thermal energy turning into kinetic energy; it needs a bunsen burner, which is not supplied.
Frequently asked questions
What can the Mounted Motor for Solar Cell lift?
Its spindle carries a 16mm diameter pulley and it can raise a mass of at least 4g when powered by the solar cell. It is a small low consumption motor designed to run directly from the solar cell output.
What size is the Demountable Transformer Kit?
The core has a cross-section of 40 x 40mm and the transformer measures 150mm (L) x 170mm (H). The U-shaped metal sheeting closes with two clamps with tightening screws, and different coils can be attached.
How does the Hero Engine work?
Heat from a bunsen burner (not supplied) produces steam jets. By Newton's third law the jets give a backward force to the nozzles, creating a turning movement so the glass apparatus rotates. It models an engine by Hero of Alexandria from about 60 AD.
